3. What is a RIC congregation?
Begun in 1983, Reconciling in Christ (RIC) is a program for Lutheran communities of faith to answer the inclusive call of the Gospel by welcoming people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. Currently, there are over 400 settings of the Lutheran church on the RIC roster, including congregations, campus ministries, synods of the ELCA and Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, one camp, other independent organizations, and colleges of the ELCA.
On November 15, 2009, Emmanuel Lutheran Church became a RIC congregation and adopted the following welcome statement:
Emmanuel Lutheran Church Warmly Welcomes:
People of all ages and of all mental and physical abilities.
People of every gender identity and sexual orientation.
People who are single, widowed, divorced, separated, partnered, or married.
People of every color, culture and economic circumstance.
Anyone who feels or has felt excluded or abandoned.
As a Reconciling in Christ Congregation, we commit ourselves to being open and affirming toward all people as children of God.
